The Big Hair Day
If you know Koko from our series, you know one thing for sure…
her hair has a personality all its own.
Over the years, I started to notice something funny — the bigger Koko’s hair was on top of her head, the more confident she became. Maybe it’s a poodle thing… or maybe it’s just Koko being Koko.
Either way, I knew one thing immediately:
her hair needed its own story.
The Real Inspiration Behind The Big Hair Day
The truth is, while Koko absolutely loves her big, fabulous hair…
she dreads getting groomed.
Hunny, on the other hand, is the complete opposite.
Hunny lives for grooming day. Whether we took her to the salon or I was at home during the pandemic teaching myself how to groom them (yes, I bought all the tools 😅), Hunny was always ready.
Koko? Not so much.
And that’s exactly where this story begins.
What Happens in the Story
Koko wakes up feeling unsure and a little nervous… because it’s salon day.
Off they go, and along the way they run into neighbors with all kinds of fun, wacky hairstyles — each one more creative than the last.
Meanwhile, Hunny does what Hunny does best —
she confidently hops into the salon chair and gets the most giant, fabulous blowout.
Big hair. No hesitation.
Koko, on the other hand, is stuck in indecision.
What style should she choose?
What if she doesn’t like it?
Finally, it’s Koko’s turn.
The hairdresser trims just a tiny snip…
…and somehow, it’s perfect.
All that worry — for something so small.
The Message Behind the Story
I wanted to tell this story in a way that helps kids:
Feel more comfortable going to the hair salon
See a variety of fun and unique styles
Understand that change doesn’t have to be dramatic
Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
And sometimes, the thing we’re most worried about turns out to be completely okay.
Why Kids Love It
The Big Hair Day is filled with bright, playful visuals and silly hairstyles that kids love pointing out on every page.
At the end of the book, there’s also a fun little activity:
“Count the Hair Brushes” — a simple way to keep kids engaged even after the story ends.
Koko’s Hair Has a Life of Its Own
At this point, Koko’s hair has truly taken on a personality of its own — both in the books and in real life.
So naturally… we even wrote a song about it.
Because when something becomes that iconic, you don’t ignore it — you celebrate it.
A Little Note From Me
This story is really about confidence, in the smallest and most relatable way.
It’s about those everyday moments that feel big to kids — like getting a haircut — and helping them feel just a little bit braver.
And of course… having a little fun along the way.
